Back to School 2023
LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear NCA Community,
I hope that you are enjoying these summer days, taking the opportunity to spend time with family and friends, rest, and maybe even pick up a great book. While the faculty and staff have enjoyed the slower pace of summer, we have also been excitedly preparing for year three at Northwest Classical Academy, including the addition of our high school! We have welcomed many new faculty and staff members who are eager to meet you and were able to travel together in June to the Hillsdale Summer Conference on Classical Education. This conference gives us a chance to reconnect with the beauty of our curriculum and inspire one another in learning the true, doing the good, and loving the beautiful.
You may notice some improvements to the campus in the coming weeks, including a freshly pressure-washed exterior, an additional dining area, new furniture for Upper School classrooms, and more lockers for NCA’s growing student population. The upstairs hallway has been cleaned and is ready for use, and you may notice that the Bostic House on the west side of the property has been removed to beautify our campus.
Behind the scenes, we have been working on improving strategies for communications, publishing our first course catalog for high school, improving our literacy training, helping new families get acclimated to our culture, purchasing school supplies for the students, ordering instruments and making preparations for Fine Arts, launching the athletics programming, and more. It has been a productive and enjoyable summer, thus far, and it has all been for the amazing students we have the privilege and honor of supporting through their academic journey. At Northwest Classical Academy, we are steadfast in our pursuit to develop students in mind and character through a content-rich curriculum that emphasizes the principles of virtuous living, traditional learning, and civic responsibility. We are thrilled to work with you to further train the minds and strengthen the hearts of your children and to see this beautiful community continue to take shape this year.
On a practical note, as we look ahead to the upcoming school year, we want families to have all the information needed to feel well-prepared for the first day of school on August 2nd. Remember that the school day runs from 8:00 am to 2:55 pm for all grades. Please, take a moment to read through the list of information and updates below.
We look forward to seeing you in August! Go Spartans!
Mr. Matthew Reger
Head of School, Northwest Classical Academy

UNIFORMS
In order to create a learning environment where students can focus on the pursuit of knowledge and virtue without unnecessary distraction, NCA students wear uniforms.
If you have not ordered uniforms for your child, please do so ASAP. Many of the necessary items can take up to three weeks if supply is low.
Please purchase all of your uniform items through our only approved vendor, Uniform Source. You may try on uniforms at the Uniform Source store and order in person or online.

ORDER LUNCHES FOR AUGUST
Families may use these instructions to set up an account with Chef Advantage, view menus, and begin ordering lunches. Our school code is NCA44. Only new NCA families will need to create an account this year; returning families will need to use the same account as last year. When ordering lunches for the first few days of school, choose any teacher assignment and then edit the teacher choice in your profile after teacher assignments are given at Open House. Families may order for as many or as few days as they prefer.
FAST FACTS ABOUT LUNCH AT NCA
School lunch costs $4.58.
Students are expected to pack a lunch from home (as well as something to drink) or PRE-ORDER online from Chef Advantage. Lunch cannot be purchased in the cafeteria.
Parents will be required to add each child to the family account in order to purchase lunches for multiple children.
Pre-ordered lunches can be purchased online by month or week or day. (No same-day orders are available.)
All lunch orders MUST be placed prior to 9:00 am the day before.
Students can bring any type of water bottle to school. It needs to be labeled with the student's first and last name. All lost and unlabeled water bottles are thrown away at the end of each month.
NCA will not allow Uber Eats, Door Dash, or other food delivery service meals to be delivered to students this year.
Chef Advantage does not include peanuts in any of its meals and the cafeteria will have designated peanut-free zones. Students may bring lunch items that include peanuts unless the teacher instructs otherwise.
The Free and Reduced Lunch program (FRL) is available for qualifying families. For more information regarding financial assistance for school lunches, please click HERE. If you have questions or would like to request FRL, please contact Mrs. Bermann, Cafeteria Manager.
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
ASP Registration is OPEN!
NCA is managing its own after-school program which will allow the instruction in virtue and character that our students receive during the school day to continue seamlessly into the hours after school. Please see the NCA After School Care webpage for more information and registration details.
ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL AND CARPOOL TAGS
Every family will be assigned a carpool tag that will be distributed at the Open House on August 1. NCA-issued carpool tags MUST be visible when you enter the carpool line for pick-up. Students will not be released to an adult who does not have the appropriate carpool tag. If carpooling with other families, the driver must display a carpool tag for each family. For the safety of our students, photocopies or pictures will not be accepted. The original carpool tag printed by NCA must be displayed.
Update arrival and dismissal information can be found here. More info to come.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES
On the first day of school, each student will have all of the necessary supplies and organizational materials on their desk and ready to be utilized. Parents will purchase supplies from the school rather than at retail stores. Parents will receive invoices for the supplies via ParentSquare in the first two weeks of school. NO ACTION IS NEEDED AT THIS TIME. Invoices for families receiving financial aid will be adjusted.
Grades K-4 School Supply Fee: $60
Grades 5-6 School Supply Fee: $65
Grade 7-9 School Supply Fee: $75
NCA does not provide criteria for student backpacks/book bags apart from the following:
Bags should be full-size (large enough to fit a folder or binder)
Bags should not have wheels
Bags should be able to fit easily into a student's locker or cubby.
Choice in print or design should reflect and uphold the student's daily pledge to
learn the true, do the good, and love the beautiful.
UPPER SCHOOL INFORMATION AND COURSE CATALOG
With the addition of the 9th grade, there is much excitement and energy among the students, faculty, and staff. There is also much to be communicated. In the coming days, 9th-grade students should receive a separate communication with information on elective selection for high school. Please look for that email from Ms. Milligan. Students starting high school this fall will also receive communication about high school email addresses, math placements, schedules, calculator requirements, and more.
Students in 7th and 8th grades will also be receiving communications about math placements and more in the coming days.
In the meantime, we are pleased to release the course catalog for High School. The course catalog provides a list of current course offerings organized by discipline. As the school continues to add grades for the following three years, the Course Catalog will expand, especially in the areas of Fine Arts and other electives.
Mr. Hudson, our new Upper School Principal, is eager to meet the NCA students very soon!
FINE ARTS
With the successful launching of our first NCA Choir and NCA String Orchestra last year, we are looking to expand the Fine Arts offerings by allowing our younger grades to participate. The orchestra will begin in 4th grade, and Choir will be open to students as young as 2nd grade. Signups are coming soon.

STUDENT SERVICES 2023-2024
Dr. Keller Taking New Position
We are excited to announce that Dr. Keller has taken a position with Liberty Classical Schools where he will provide support to both the ACA and NCA communities as the Director of Public Programs, Grants, and Revenue. As a result, he will no longer serve NCA as the Director of Student Services. While he will no longer be supporting students at the school level, his work at the Liberty level will continue to ensure strong services for all students across our network of schools. We thank him for his work over the past few years and wish him all the best.
Special Education
We are thrilled to announce that Mrs. Constance Weeks will serve as the Special Education Lead Teacher at Northwest Classical Academy. Any questions or concerns related to Special Education services throughout the school year should be directed to her. She can be reached via email at cweeks@nwclasical.org.
School Counseling
This year marks the launch of the school counseling program at NCA. Mrs. Jennifer Brown will continue in the role she has served over the past two years, and she will also serve officially as the Lower School Counselor. We are pleased to announce the hiring of an Upper School Counselor, Mrs. Kristen Burroughs. You will have the chance to meet and learn more about school counseling at this year's Open House.
PARENT VOLUNTEER ASSOCIATION
We are thrilled to kick off an excellent school year of parent involvement through Northwest Classical Academy's Parent Volunteer Association! We are equally thrilled to have Melissa Sarathy returning as Co-President for the 2023-2024 school year and to have Diana Kinnett joining her to represent the lower school. It's going to be an amazing year!
Level 2 Training
Each year, every parent volunteer must be cleared as a “Level 2” volunteer in order to volunteer in any capacity at NCA. Level 2 status from last school year will not carry forward. The process will take 15-20 min and involves watching two videos and filling out a Google form about what you learned.
You can access the Level 2 training and the additional training required to volunteer in the cafeteria by clicking here.
Once you have watched both videos and completed the form, you will be cleared to perform supervised volunteering at NCA.
We highly encourage you to take the training before the school year begins to be pre-cleared. If you have any questions about the process, please contact Mrs. Williams at kwilliams@nwclassical.org.
Volunteer Interest Form
Get involved and make a difference by volunteering with the PVA. If you are interested in volunteering in any way during the upcoming school year, please complete the 2023-2024 PVA Volunteer Interest Form to explore exciting opportunities. This is not a commitment, so please check all areas that interest you!
FALL ATHLETICS
This fall NCA will be offering our 6th - 9th-grade student athletes the exciting opportunity to compete in boys and girls Cross Country as well as girls Volleyball. We have a great schedule with some wonderful and energetic coaches who are passionate about developing our student-athletes. Many of our coaches are also teachers.
Cross Country has already begun training with a good turnout of runners devoting time out of their summer to prepare for the upcoming season. Volleyball is also starting open gym next week to gear up for the season. It is not too late for students to sign up for Cross Country or Volleyball tryouts. Click here to visit the athletics page on the NCA website for more information on how to get started.
New Athletic Opportunity | Cheerleading
We are thrilled to announce that we will have a CHEERLEADING SQUAD for Middle School and JV Basketball games this year! More information about tryout dates and schedules will be coming soon.
PARENTSQUARE
NCA will continue to use ParentSquare for the 2023-2024 school year for school-wide communications, teacher newsletters, and announcements for student and parent interest groups. ParentSquare will also continue to house our community directory. For returning families, please take a few minutes to update your photo and your settings for the current year. Please remember that you must change your contact information to "visible" in order to be included in the directory.
New families, you have received an email inviting you to join ParentSquare. ParentSquare has a website that is best for some features and a phone app that puts communications at your fingertips. Please take the time to learn how to navigate both the website and the phone app.
While ParentSquare is a wonderful tool for mass communications and one-way announcements, we ask that you contact teachers through their NCA email accounts rather than the Direct Message feature in ParentSquare. Feel free to continue to utilize direct messages for parent-to-parent communications.
Please download the ParentSquare App HERE to ensure you do not miss important information from your child’s teacher or from NCA.
Visit these FAQs for questions about setting up your account.
